09/07/2009 - Extend gangmaster legislation

Solidarity has joined calls to extend the remit of the Gangmasters Licensing Agency. At present the reach of the Act is limited to food and agriculture but Solidarity say it should be extended to cover the construction industry too. The call follows the publication of a report by Rita Donaghy, former head of the conciliation service ACAS into construction site fatalities. The report also advocates the introduction of statutory directors' duties which would make company bosses directly responsible if a worker was killed as a result of health and safety  breaches.

Solidarity President, Adam Walker, said:-

"If we extend the remit of the Gangmasters Licensing Agency we can make building sites safer and protect construction workers. Solidarity would like to see the recommendations of this government-commissioned report implemented in full."
